Grilling Festivities: How to Surprise Your Family on Christmas and New Year's

Feast

The end of the year is always an exciting time, with December bringing a variety of festivities: office parties, vacations, the start of summer, Christmas, and New Year's Eve.

Beyond the festive decorations and gift exchanges, the highlight for many is the traditional feast. This typically includes an abundance of dishes like roast turkey, stuffing, chicken salad, pork leg, couscous, French toast, and more.

While sticking to traditional customs is important, there's also room for innovation. That's why Tomasi presents a challenge: to prepare the entire Christmas and New Year's Eve feast on the grill. You can choose between a gas or charcoal grill to suit your preference.

Here at Tomasi, we're always striving to make life easier for our customers. So, we've put together some invaluable tips for you: from appetizers to main courses, sides, and desserts. Take note and join us:

1. Appetizers

  • Garlic Bread: as an appetizer or side dish, the Sunday staple Garlic Bread can also make an appearance on Christmas or New Year's Day. Prepare it at home or, if you prefer, buy it ready-made and just bake. When taking it off the fire, opt for Tomasi's multi-purpose tongs, safer, more ergonomic, and resistant.
  • Special Skewer: alternate on the Tomasi skewer chicken hearts, cheese curds, and cherry tomatoes. This is one of those recipes that will certainly return to the table on various occasions throughout the year.

2. Main Course

Think of at least two types of meat: a poultry and a pork cut. A classic combo, especially on Christmas, is the Doubled up. With this premise, test new recipes and surprising combinations.

  • Turkey or Chicken: no cheating and preparing the Christmas bird in the Tomasi oven - remember that our proposal is to prepare the whole feast on the grill! Marinate the meat with your favorite herbs and spices for a few hours. Place it on the grill and bake slowly.
  • Stuffed Pork Loin or Pork Leg: for the loin, bet on ingredients like dried fruits, nuts, leeks, and cherry tomatoes. Pork meat pairs well with marinades based on certain acids (white wine, citrus fruit juice, and vinegar), fats (butter, olive oil, and vegetable oils), and seasonings (fresh and dried herbs, pepper, onion, garlic, and salt). Place it on the grill and bake slowly.

3. Side Dishes

  • Grilled Vegetables: as a side or main dish for vegetarians and vegans, prepare on the skewer or directly on the Tomasi grill. Go for zucchini, eggplant, bell peppers, and mushrooms. Season with extra virgin olive oil, salt, and pepper. Even those who don't usually eat vegetables often approve.
  • Baked Potatoes: season the potatoes with salt, pepper, and herbs, wrap them in aluminum foil, and place them on the embers. Perfect to accompany the meats or (why not?) to be part of a very different potato salad.
  • Onion Skewers: with skin and all, place the onions on the skewer and grill them close to the fire. The idea here is to char them. After cooling, season with salt, vinegar, and olive oil. There you have it, a divine salad. Red onion, softer and sweeter, is a good choice.
  • Spicy Sauce: directly on the grill or wrapped in aluminum foil, combine peppers (more than one type), bell peppers, tomatoes, garlic, and a small sprig of rosemary. After baking well, process with salt and olive oil. It's delicious and pairs well with various dishes.

4. Desserts

  • Grilled Pineapple: another classic that can grace the Feast. Brush slices of medium pineapple with a mixture of brown sugar and cinnamon. Then, just grill and enjoy. Pineapple is a fruit that aids in digestion, perfect for occasions of abundant meals.
  • Grilled Panettone with Ice Cream: cut medium slices of panettone or chocotone. On the inner faces, spread butter and grill. After golden brown, serve on a plate with strawberry or red fruit jam and add a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Simple, quick, and addictive.

In summary, traditional Christmas and New Year's Eve recipes can be replaced or, even better, revamped. When we take on challenges in the kitchen and in life, good things usually happen.
